THE GROVE PONDS

The Grove Ponds are a series of 3 linked ponds on the edge of The Grove housing estate and were created a number of years ago on the old Consett Steelworks site.   The ponds have been managed by Acorn Trust since 1995 for the benefit of wildlife and the local community. and are designated a Site of Nature Conservation Importance.   As the soil is quite alkaline, a result of the steelworks activities, there is a range of wildflowers and insects on the site which are quite unusual for the North East of England.   The Ponds themselves are distinct from each other and support a range of wildlife from damselflies to moorhens and great diving beetles.

Acorn Trust hold a range of activities at the Ponds ranging from 'dirty weekends' where you can join in with the management of reedmace, Pond Dips where you can investigate the denizens of the deep and a range of other practical tasks during the week such as fence maintenance, hay meadow management and surveying. 2002 is looking to be very exciting with activities for all ages and abilities.

This project has just been given funding for various works and activities by NWET, administered by Northumbrian Water, in the last round of the grant.
