The Sustainable Education project idea devloped as a result of the increasing number of enquiries from members of the public with regard to general recycling and sustainability issues. Acorn Trust had been operating a School Recycling scheme and Business Recycling scheme for three years beforehand, but it was felt that more could be done to encourage community groups to recycle.
The aim of the project is to encourage groups not previously targeted to participate in practical waste minimisation through the principles of waste reduction, reuse and recycling. WI groups, residents associations, Brownies Scouts and Guides groups are just some of the groups this project is aimed at.
The project was launched in November 2000 -to date there have been 67 participants and workshops run with:
- Tantobie Resident's Association
- Anfield Plain Gardening Club
- The Grove Brownies
- Lanchester Brownies
- Acorn Amblers
During the workshops topics such as waste minimisation and recycling, junk art and organic gardening have been covered and tried out. The sustainable library has been very popular with many people borrowing books and buying equipment on a "try before you buy" basis, following up ideas discussed at their leisure.
As a result of increasing interest and Derwentside District Council's expanding kerbside collection scheme (now including a collection of cans, paper and textiles) the project will be developed in conjunction with the Council.
If you are interested in taking part in one of our Sustainability Workshops or are part of a community group which would like to host a Sustainable Education session, contact Joe for more information.
